Autumn is Definitely Falling around Here

Posted by mtmom on October 28, 2010

We had a very blustery Monday, and it made quite a change in our foliage.

Here’s the maple tree in front of our house.

But what first brought my attention to the change was the locust tree in the back yard — I see it out the sliding-glass-door when I sit down to breakfast.  More specifically, the sight of our back porch!

Patio covered in fallen locust leaves!

Here are views of the source-tree.  (As you can see, the aspens have not fully turned, down here near town.  On the Peaks, they are past their peak of color.)

I am pleased.

I very much hope that Robert will be pleased as well.

Fall is definitely coming to the Colorado Plateau.

We expect our first overnight freeze of the season tonight.

The sumac has gone through it’s colors, and is getting rather bare.

But the locust is just beginning to change.

Meanwhile, inside, the geranium and cactus are happily putting out buds and new “leaves”, respectively.

And this morning, we have the first snow on the Peaks!

The Sumac always goes First. . . .

Posted by mtmom on September 3, 2009

The very beginnings of autumn are starting to appear here on the mountain.

Two weeks ago, a *few* yellow leaves peeked out from among their green brethren on the locust trees. aug_locust

And the sumac began to blush in hidden places.  aug_sumac1

But, with Labor Day coming up this weekend (and the County Fair — more on that later), the sumac has kicked up the colors a notch.

sept_sumac1 sept_sumac2Everything is still mostly green, as you see, including that aspen on the left and the honey locust on the right.

But more and more yellow, orange, and red are coming out in the sumac patch.

Every year it’s lovely,

and comes with cooler mornings and evenings.

One can just FEEL autumn easing on in.

It stirs something in me. . . .

How about you?
